Amazon's A9 search engine team get a set back, Google hires Udi Manber
Amazon's main tech investments are on platform, search,
Web services
and digital, but it is especially hard to discern where the secretive
Seattle company's tech spending is focused: on playing catch-up or
innovation. In an e-commerce report, Merrill Lynch analyst Justin
Post wrote that he expects Amazon technology investment to reach
$601 million in 2006, a 33 percent jump that is "well ahead of our
estimated revenue growth of 20 percent, but a deceleration from
2005 spending growth of 62 percent."

Amazon rolling out its beta testing of contextual text ads
"When I first heard about this I thought it'd be Amazon product
listings displayed in an Adsense-like way and I figured it'd
analyze your content for products to serve, but they'd be Amazon
products. Turns out I was wrong and now they want their own
contextual advertising network". Beasley turned down Amazon's
proposal, because it would mean having to dispense with his
existing Google AdSense ads, which he cited as being "just too
profitable for me."

Is there something defective with Amazon's A9 search engine?
A9.com Yellow Pages and its “BlockView” technology lets users
virtually walk streets and see businesses from street-level (via
photos taken from trucks). Users can also upload their favorite
photos from outside and inside of businesses which is fabulous for
bars & restaurants. User reviews, business profiles, photos, and
the ability to call the business via the web all rolled into one
is a local search and social tool which is only rivaled in user
experience by Yahoo Local.

BMW's site removed from Google's index because BMW used doorway pages
"Google may temporarily or permanently ban any site or site authors
that engage in tactics designed to distort their rankings or mislead
users in order to preserve the accuracy and quality of our search
results. "We will re-include sites if we are sure that they are no
longer trying to violate our quality guidelines." Many Web sites
choose to "optimize" their ranking by working on the site content
and architecture so that Google can effectively rank it.
