Yahoo is on a hiring spree
McAfee said "the company has assembled "the largest group of academic-level economists in
a corporate environment since Bell Labs. We're not focused on immediate product development,
but on where we see these markets going is the next frontier of the application of market design
in the real world." Duncan Watts said his areas of interest include "trying to understand how
social networks and communities evolve over time, how people influence each others' behavior
and how people find things that are useful."

Yahoo tells the reasons why it is shutting down its auction site
One of the reasons Yahoo offered as to its closure was that a large number of people are using
eBay. It also added that managing online auctions is a very time-consuming process. Some observers
also wonder if the closing of Yahoo Auctions has anything to do with the large Yahoo/eBay partnership
which has Yahoo using Paypal as its online payment system, and eBay serving Yahoo Ads in its search
results.

The merger talks between Yahoo and Microsoft are over
On May 5, Brier Dudley demanded a good follow-up story from the New York Post for this wild goose
chase. He got a story, but not a good one. The Post followed up on the stock trading, sticks to
its guns and said the following: Sources said the talks with Microsoft are wide-ranging and include
everything from an outright acquisition to the purchase of an equity stake to a potential joint
venture.
