Google and others face mounting legal costs to defend against patent claims
Google policy counsel and legislative strategist Johanna Shelton and Michelle Lee, head of
patents and patent strategy, urged Congress to pass patent reform legislation in a September
4th Google blog post. Shelton and Lee said "Google and other technology companies increasingly
face mounting legal costs to defend against frivolous patent claims from parties gaming the
system to forestall competition or reap windfall profits."
Oct. 2, 2007:
Yahoo to further its leadership in mobile advertising
Marco Boerries, executive v.p. of Yahoo's Connected Life Division said "Yahoo's new partnership
with Telefonica furthers our leadership in mobile and demonstrates our commitment to working with
partners to enhance the Internet experience for customers on their mobile phone." Boerries added
"together, we can now increase the overall usage of mobile Internet services and create new revenue
streams through mobile advertising."

It is hoped that this will create new opportunities for third-party publishers and
media companies, while at the same time help harness the power of social media and user-generated
content. For example, consider the Yahoo Music Video application on Facebook, which is supposed
to bring big entertainment brands to life on the Internet.
